Famous Faces
There are many famous faces that you may recognise from Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys, some of which you can read more about below. Other notable famous faces include:
Gabriel Batistuta, who was spotted by Marcelo Bielsa as a junior, and is the top goalscorer for Argentina in the FIFA World Cup. With 54 goals from 77 games, Batistuta was the overall top goalscorer for Argentina, a record he held until it was surpassed by Lionel Messi in 2016.
Fabian Costello, who spent ten years in Newell’s youth section as a promising young striker and in the first team that Bielsa ever managed. Costello went on to win the 1987 Copa Libertadores - the South American equivalent of the Champions League - with Uruguayan side Penarol.
Gerardo "Tata" Martino, who has the most appearances for the club (508 matches and 38 goals); was captain under Bielsa for three title wins; returned to the club as manager in 2012; and won the title in 2013, the only person in the history of the club to win a title both as a player and as a coach.
Víctor Rogelio Ramos, who is the club’s top goalscorer with 104 goals. Ramos started with Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys in 1978 and spent most of his playing career at the club.
Jorge Valdano, who played for Newell’s Old Boys between 1973-75; was part of the Mexico 1986 World Cup winning team; became a Real Madrid legend as a player and manager; and after finishing his career as a player, now works as Sports Director and Deputy to the President for Real Madrid.
Mario Zanabria, who remained in the red and black jersey for five seasons, playing 240 games and scoring 30 goals. One of those goals was a memorable left foot shot on 2 June 1974, against Rosario Central, which secured Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys first title.
